Association of Media and Communicators Hosts Insightful Expert Talk on ‘Laws for Maintenance and Welfare of Parents’ by Renowned Legal Scholar Maharishi Kumar Kasoudhan
Gurugram: The Association of Media and Communicators, an academic association of the Faculty of Mass Communication and Media Technology at SGT University organized a highly informative event focusing on the legal aspects concerning the maintenance and welfare of parents and senior citizens. The event featured an expert talk delivered by Maharishi Kumar Kasoudhan, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law, SGT University, who is widely recognized for his expertise in this field. During his lecture, Mr. Maharshi Kumar shed light on the significance of maintenance laws, which encompass various aspects such as biological, adopted, stepfather, and stepmother laws applicable to all parents. He particularly emphasized the importance of Section 125 of the CrPC (Criminal Procedure Code), which grants parents the right to demand maintenance expenses from their children in accordance with the law. The students in attendance gained comprehensive knowledge on the subject as he explained the distinctions between senior citizens and parents. Drawing attention to a critical issue, Mr. Kumar highlighted that parents who have been deceived by their children, resulting in the loss of their property or a lack of respect, can file a parent-child case under Section 24. This provision enables parents to reclaim their land and holds children accountable for their actions. Offenders involved in fraudulent cases may face imprisonment for a period of up to three months and a fine of Rs 15,000.
Professor Sushil Manav, Dean of the Faculty of Mass Communication and Media Technology, acknowledged the changing dynamics of family structures and the increasing importance of maintenance laws in the context of nuclear families. He emphasized the significance of adapting laws to align with the current social structure. Expressing gratitude to Mr. Maharshi Kumar for his enlightening session, Department Head Shashi Kumar Pandey highlighted the importance of maintenance laws in safeguarding the rights of mothers who endure immense pain during childbirth, only to find themselves abandoned and homeless in their later years. He urged all students to honor and respect their parents, teachers, and healthcare professionals, acknowledging the crucial role they play in shaping individuals’ lives. The event saw the presence of all the faculty and staff members of the department.
