In a unique initiative in Haryana, the SGT Times, a YouTube-based NewsChannel of the Faculty of Mass Communication and Media Technology at the SGT University has initiated a new slot of news for the ‘Deaf and Dumb’ (now referred to as Divyang) persons by showing news using ‘Sign Language’.
Parveen Kumar, a trained Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) registered faculty, has been sitting with the news anchor to explain the news read by the anchor in sign language.
Now, keeping in mind the situation for Disable people, the SGT Times will also run such a slot using Sign Language, where all important news will be shown.
“So far, SGT University is the only institution in Haryana in which high and quality education can be provided to the deaf community through sign language. The university also provides all kinds of accessibility facilities to the people,” said Kumar.
He also added that this is an important and commendable step in the field of special education by SGT University, which has been provided with a sign language Interpreter to provide quality education to deaf children.
Dr. Madhavi Sharma, the Dean, Faculty of Education, said, “It is an era when there is news for every single person, be it for those who can hear and speak, but even for those who were “Deaf and Dumb” (Now referred to as Divyang).”
Prof Sushil Manav, Dean, Faculty of Mass Communication and Media Technology, said that the idea behind this initiative is to provide news to those who are unable to hear and speak and also to provide journalism students exposure to anchoring news in coordination with a language interpreter.
