Tamil Nadu Rains: Red Alert Issued for Coastal Districts; Schools Closed in Chennai and Chengalpattu

Due to a predicted major depression in Tamil Nadu’s coastal areas, Chennai has announced a Friday (November 29, 2024) school holiday. Due to Tamil Nadu’s severe rainfall, Chengalpattu’s collector has also announced a school holiday for today.

Approximately 310 km southeast of Nagapattinam, 410 km southeast of Puducherry, and 480 km south-southeast of Chennai are currently located within the deep depression that covers the southwest Bay of Bengal.

By the morning of the 30th, it will probably move north-northwest and cross between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram. The director of the Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre, S Balachandran, said on Thursday that “rainfall is expected to occur in the following two to three days, with fairly widespread moderate rainfall in most parts of Tamil Nadu.”

Regarding severe rainfall, Chengalpattu and Viluppuram, two locations in Delta districts, would experience it during the next 24 hours. He stated that exceptionally heavy rainfall is expected in Viluppuram, Cuddalore, Puducherry, Chengalpattu, and one or two locations in Delta districts tomorrow.

As the system approaches, the National Hurricane Centre has issued a red weather notice, indicating that there will be exceptionally heavy rainfall exceeding 24.4 cm in one or two locations in some delta and north coastal districts on Friday, November 29, 2024, and Saturday, November 30, 2024.

Many areas of the state would experience moderate rainfall when the weather system crossed a deep depression. On Friday, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, and Nagapattinam districts, as well as Puducherry and Karaikal, may have one or two locations hit by extremely heavy rains. On Friday, there is a chance for heavy rainfall in eight other districts, including Ranipet and Tiruchi.

As a precaution, the government has announced that all schools and colleges in the Karaikal and Puducherry territories will be closed on Friday and Saturday.
