CEC Gyanesh Kumar Assures Zero Tolerance for Violence
With just days remaining for the first phase of the Bihar Assembly elections on November 6, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar reaffirmed that the Election Commission of India (ECI) has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards violence during the polls.
Addressing reporters in Kanpur on Sunday, November 2, 2025, Kumar urged the people of Bihar to vote without fear. He assured that comprehensive arrangements have been made to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful voting process throughout the state.
“I appeal to everyone to participate in the election process and exercise their right to vote. The Election Commission has zero tolerance for violence; no such incidents will be tolerated,” Kumar stated.
He also emphasized that the election machinery is fully prepared to maintain law and order during polling. “Our 243 returning officers, district collectors, Superintendents of Police (SPs), Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs), and police observers are fully equipped to ensure smooth and peaceful voting,” he said.
This assurance comes amid concerns following instances of violence during campaigning in some areas of the state, including Mokama. The poll body had previously taken strict action against officials in Patna district after these incidents, reinforcing its commitment to conducting elections in a safe and disciplined manner.
Kumar’s visit to Kanpur was particularly notable as he received the Distinguished Alumni Award (DAA) from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, his alma mater. The award recognized his outstanding contributions to public service and his leadership in strengthening democratic processes in India.
The Bihar Assembly elections will be held in multiple phases, with the first phase scheduled for November 6. The Election Commission has deployed additional security forces, quick response teams, and flying squads to monitor sensitive areas and prevent any disturbances during the voting process.
Kumar concluded by encouraging every eligible voter to make their voice count, stating, “Democracy becomes stronger when every citizen participates. Your vote is your power—use it responsibly and fearlessly.”
