Portals of Gangotri, Yamunotri Dhams to Open on April 30, Marking the Beginning of Chardham Yatra 2025
Uttarkashi, March 31: The portals of the sacred Gangotri and Yamunotri dhams, located in the high Himalayan region of Uttarakhand, are set to reopen for devotees on April 30, 2025. This marks the beginning of this year’s Chardham Yatra.
According to Suresh Semwal, Secretary of the Gangotri Temple Committee, the doors of Gangotri Dham will open at 10:30 AM on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya. This announcement was made on March 30, coinciding with the Navratri festival and the first day of the Hindu New Year.
Ceremonial Journey of Goddess Ganga’s Palanquin
In preparation for the grand opening, the festive palanquin of Goddess Ganga will depart from its winter residence in Mukhba village at around noon on April 29. The palanquin will make an overnight stop at Bhairav Temple in Bhairon Valley before proceeding to Gangotri Dham the following morning at 9 AM. After a series of traditional rituals, including havan (fire offerings) and special prayers, the sacred doors will be unlocked at 10:30 AM for devotees to seek blessings.
Yamunotri Dham to Open on the Same Day
The portals of Yamunotri Dham will also open for devotees on April 30. However, the specific auspicious time for the ceremony will be finalized on April 6, which coincides with Yamuna Jayanti.
Opening Dates for Kedarnath and Badrinath Dhams
Following the openings of Gangotri and Yamunotri, the doors of Kedarnath Dham will open on May 2, while Badrinath Dham will welcome devotees on May 4. With this, the complete Chardham Yatra 2025 will be in full swing, attracting thousands of pilgrims from across the country and beyond.
Every year, lakhs of devotees undertake the sacred Chardham Yatra in search of divine blessings and spiritual enlightenment. The reopening of these Himalayan shrines marks a highly anticipated event, bringing with it a wave of devotion, tradition, and cultural significance.
