ChatGPT Go Now Free for Indian Users for a Year

New Delhi: In a major move to expand its footprint in India, OpenAI has announced that its ChatGPT Go plan will be free for Indian users for one year. The offer comes as the company ramps up efforts in its second-largest and fastest-growing market.

ChatGPT Go, introduced in India in August 2025 at ₹399 per month, was designed as a mid-tier plan bridging the gap between the free ChatGPT version and the premium ChatGPT Plus. The Go plan offers advanced features such as higher message limits, more daily image generations, file uploads, and improved memory for personalized, context-aware responses.

The one-year free access is seen as a direct response to increasing competition in the AI space. Rivals like Google have recently made their AI Pro membership — originally priced at ₹19,500 — free for students, while Perplexity, in collaboration with Airtel, has been offering free access to its premium AI plan.

Nick Turley, Vice President and Head of ChatGPT, said, “Since launching ChatGPT Go in India a few months ago, the adoption and creativity we’ve seen from users has been inspiring. Ahead of our first DevDay Exchange event in India, we’re making ChatGPT Go freely available for a year to help more people across India access and benefit from advanced AI.”

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized India’s growing importance, noting that the country is both the company’s second-largest market and its fastest-growing. He added that paid subscriptions for ChatGPT Go in India have more than doubled since its introduction, showing strong demand for AI-powered tools.

The ChatGPT Go plan now operates in nearly 90 markets worldwide, and India’s inclusion in the free access rollout underscores the strategic value of its expanding user base.

Experts say the move signals a heated race among global tech giants to capture India’s rapidly growing AI market. By offering free or discounted access to premium services, companies are competing to attract millions of new users who are increasingly exploring generative AI tools for education, business, and creativity.

With this announcement, OpenAI aims not only to strengthen its presence in India but also to make advanced AI features more accessible to a wider audience. The company hopes this initiative will encourage innovation and promote responsible use of AI across various sectors.
