Delhi Introduces 145 DEVI Bus Routes for Metro Access
Delhi: In a major push for sustainable urban mobility, the Delhi government has announced the rollout of 145 new routes for the DEVI (Delhi EV Connector) electric buses. The initiative aims to improve last-mile connectivity for Metro commuters, especially in areas underserved by traditional transport systems.
The pilot phase of this scheme has been launched in Yamuna Vihar, with a citywide implementation planned soon after. These compact, 9-metre-long electric buses are specifically designed to operate in narrow lanes where the usual 12-metre buses cannot go.
Officials stated that previous long-distance routes failed to attract sufficient ridership for smaller buses. To tackle this, a new route plan has been developed in collaboration with IIT Delhi. The routes will be optimized to link residential areas to the nearest Metro stations more effectively.
To further streamline the commuter experience, the government plans to introduce specialized DEVI bus stops featuring digital boards that provide real-time route and location information. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is also contributing to the planning and integration.
In a related development, DTC has initiated the use of Electronic Ticketing Machines (ETMs) at Rajghat 2, Kalkaji, and Hasanpur depots. These machines support the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), enabling seamless travel across Metro and Rapid Rail systems.
The DEVI bus initiative is being seen as a key step toward creating a cleaner and more connected capital city.
