Heavy Rainfall Causes Chaos in Delhi, IMD Issues Red Alert

Delhi witnessed severe waterlogging, traffic congestion, and power outages on Tuesday morning as intense monsoon rainfall battered the national capital. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Delhi-NCR and surrounding regions.

Rain started early in the morning and intensified rapidly, catching many commuters off guard during peak hours. Several prominent roads, including ITO, Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road, Nehru Place, Kailash Colony, Dhaula Kuan, RK Puram, and Patel Nagar, were submerged under water. Areas like Zakhira and Bhishma Pitamah Marg also faced severe blockages due to underpass flooding.

Despite the widespread disruption, no major flight delays were reported. However, airlines issued travel advisories asking passengers to reach airports early and plan for delays en route. Traffic police and civic authorities were deployed to manage the chaos, and water pumps were used to drain low-lying areas.

The IMD warned of more heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and thunderstorms for the next 24 hours. Wind speeds reached up to 40 km/h in several parts of the city. The red alert urges residents to remain indoors unless travel is essential, especially in flood-prone and low-lying regions.

This monsoon spell has exposed Delhi’s vulnerability to waterlogging due to inadequate drainage infrastructure. Citizens took to social media to share visuals of stranded vehicles, submerged roads, and long traffic jams.

Authorities have appealed to residents to stay updated through official channels and follow safety instructions. Emergency helpline numbers have been activated, and control rooms are on high alert to respond to distress calls.
