Delhi Government to Install 5,000 Water ATMs Across the City

New Delhi: The Delhi government has announced an ambitious plan to install 5,000 water dispensing units, commonly known as water ATMs, throughout the city. This initiative aims to provide clean drinking water at affordable prices, particularly benefiting areas that do not have direct pipeline connections and rely on water tankers.

Officials stated that the project would be carried out through a public-private partnership model, focusing on markets and localities where the piped water supply is inadequate. Water ATMs have already gained popularity in neighboring cities like Gurugram and Faridabad, with some areas under the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) already equipped with these facilities.

In 2023, the previous AAP government proposed the installation of 500 water ATMs in slum clusters across the city, but the project did not come to fruition. However, some reverse osmosis (RO) plants have been set up in locations such as Khajan Basti (Hari Nagar), Shakurbasti, Deshbandhu Apartments (Kalkaji), and Jharoda to provide clean drinking water.

With this new initiative, the government aims to enhance water accessibility and improve hygiene standards, ensuring that every resident has access to safe drinking water. The upcoming installations will help reduce reliance on tanker water supply and address the issue of water scarcity in high-demand areas.

The Delhi government’s commitment to providing clean drinking water through these ATMs is expected to have a significant positive impact on the city’s public health and sanitation infrastructure.
