Government Directs Refineries to Boost LPG Production for Domestic Supply
The Government of India has instructed oil refineries across the country to increase the production of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) to enhance domestic supply in light of ongoing geopolitical disruptions affecting global fuel markets.
According to a statement shared by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on social media, this initiative aims to ensure a continuous supply of LPG for Indian households. The government has emphasized that domestic consumers are the top priority as the country navigates supply constraints caused by international tensions and fluctuations in fuel supply chains.
To streamline distribution and prevent misuse, the government has introduced a 25-day inter-booking period for LPG cylinders. This rule is designed to discourage hoarding and black marketing, ensuring that LPG cylinders are distributed fairly among consumers. Officials say this measure will help maintain a steady availability of cooking gas, especially for families that rely on LPG as their primary fuel source.
The ministry has also clarified that imported LPG supplies are being allocated strategically. Non-domestic LPG requirements will primarily be met through imported gas, with priority given to essential sectors such as hospitals and educational institutions. These institutions heavily rely on LPG for cooking, heating, and other operational needs, making an uninterrupted supply crucial for their daily functioning.
For other non-domestic users, such as restaurants, hotels, and industrial units, the government has established a dedicated review mechanism. A committee consisting of three Executive Directors from Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) has been formed to evaluate requests and representations related to LPG supply. This committee will assess demand and determine allocations based on necessity and availability.
The government’s decision comes at a time when energy markets are facing uncertainty due to global geopolitical developments that have disrupted fuel transportation routes and supply chains. By boosting domestic LPG production and prioritizing critical sectors, authorities aim to stabilize supply and minimize the impact of global disruptions on Indian consumers.
Officials believe that these measures will help maintain a balanced LPG distribution system while ensuring that households and essential institutions continue to receive an adequate fuel supply. This initiative is also expected to strengthen energy security and improve the resilience of India’s domestic fuel distribution network.
With LPG playing a vital role in everyday cooking and household energy needs, the government’s latest directive is viewed as a proactive step toward safeguarding consumer access and preventing supply shortages during uncertain global conditions.
