Jagdeep Dhankhar Resigns as Vice President
New Delhi: In a surprising political development, India’s 14th Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has resigned from his post, citing health concerns. His resignation, addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, takes effect immediately. The move comes two years ahead of the scheduled end of his term and has sparked debates in political circles over possible underlying reasons.
Jagdeep Dhankhar, known for his sharp commentary on judicial overreach and vocal presence in the Rajya Sabha, leaves behind a significant legacy. A former Governor of West Bengal and a seasoned advocate, Dhankhar often found himself at odds with both the judiciary and the Opposition.
In his resignation letter, Dhankhar expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the President for their trust. He called it a privilege to serve in a period marked by “remarkable economic progress” and described the experience as a “true honour.”
Born in Kithana, a small village in Rajasthan, Dhankhar’s journey to the Vice Presidency is a tale of perseverance and determination. He began his career as a lawyer in the Rajasthan High Court and later at the Supreme Court, before shifting to politics. Originally with the Congress, he moved to the BJP in the 1990s and also briefly served as a Union Minister.
His resignation has triggered responses from the Opposition, with Congress hinting that “there is more to the resignation than meets the eye.” Political observers believe Dhankhar’s decision could have wider implications within the power corridors of Delhi.
