LPG Cylinder Prices Increased by ₹50, New Rates Effective April 8

New Delhi, April 8, 2025 — In a major update affecting households across the country, Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced a hike of ₹50 in the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders. The new prices will come into effect from today, April 8, 2025.

As per the latest notification, the cost of a 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder has risen to ₹853 for general consumers, compared to the previous price of ₹803. For beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), the cylinder will now cost ₹553, up from ₹503.

Government’s Rationale

Minister Puri emphasized that the hike was necessitated by the rising international crude oil prices and increased transportation costs. “While we strive to shield our citizens from global market volatility, some adjustments are inevitable to maintain the financial viability of our oil marketing companies,” he stated.

The minister assured the public that the government remains committed to ensuring that cooking gas remains accessible and affordable, particularly for economically vulnerable sections. Puri highlighted that the subsidy component under PMUY will continue to offset some of the burden for low-income families.

Impact on Households

The price hike is expected to strain household budgets already grappling with inflation. Middle-class families, in particular, may feel the pinch as monthly cooking expenses rise. Experts suggest that the government could soon introduce new measures to cushion the impact, such as enhanced subsidy schemes or targeted financial relief for eligible beneficiaries.

Political Reactions

Opposition parties were quick to criticize the move, labeling it “anti-people” and demanding an immediate rollback. Several leaders pointed out that the hike comes at a time when citizens are already burdened by high food and commodity prices.

Looking Ahead

This price adjustment also signals a possible trend of gradual increases in the energy sector as India navigates the global energy crisis. Citizens are encouraged to monitor official updates and explore alternative energy-saving measures at the household level.

The government has assured that it will closely monitor international trends and domestic implications, promising timely interventions to safeguard consumer interests.
