Mitchell Starc Retires from T20Is to Focus on Tests and 2027 ODI World Cup

Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc has announced his retirement from Twenty20 internationals, drawing the curtain on a 65-match career in the shortest format. The 35-year-old made the decision to step away from T20Is in order to focus on Australia’s demanding Test schedule and to prepare himself for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Starc, who last featured in the T20 format during the World Cup in the USA and West Indies, confirmed his retirement just six months ahead of the next edition of the tournament in India and Sri Lanka. Despite the timing, he insisted his focus remains on long-form cricket and Australia’s major campaigns over the next few years.

Over his T20I career, Starc claimed 79 wickets at an economy rate of 7.74, making him Australia’s second-highest wicket-taker in the format, behind only Adam Zampa. His journey began against Pakistan in 2012, and he went on to feature in five of the six T20 World Cups, missing only the 2016 edition due to injury. He was a central figure in Australia’s title-winning campaign in Dubai in 2021.

Reflecting on his journey, Starc said, “Test cricket is and has always been my highest priority. I have loved every minute of every T20 game for Australia, particularly the 2021 World Cup, not just because we won but because of the incredible group and fun along the way. Looking ahead, I feel this is the best way forward to remain fresh, fit and at my best for the Ashes, the India tour, and the 2027 ODI World Cup.”

Australia’s schedule from late 2026 is packed, including a home series against Bangladesh, tours to South Africa and New Zealand, followed by a five-Test series in India. That will be succeeded by the 150th anniversary Test against England at the MCG and an away Ashes series. The year concludes with the ODI World Cup across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, where Australia will defend their crown.

George Bailey, chair of selectors, praised Starc’s contributions. “Mitch should be incredibly proud of his T20 career. He was integral to our 2021 World Cup win and had a knack for breaking open games with his wickets. We look forward to celebrating his T20 career appropriately.”

Starc’s retirement coincided with the announcement of Australia’s squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against New Zealand. The squad sees returns for Matt Short and Marcus Stoinis, while Nathan Ellis withdrew due to family reasons.

While Starc bids farewell to T20Is, his eyes remain firmly on Test cricket and the challenges that lie ahead.
