Nitish Kumar to Resign on Nov 19, Take Oath Again as Bihar Chief Minister on Nov 20
Bihar is preparing for a significant political event as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is set to be sworn in again on November 20, 2025, following the planned dissolution of the Assembly. On Monday, November 17, Mr. Kumar met with Governor Arif Mohammad Khan at Raj Bhavan after chairing the last Cabinet meeting of his current government. The Cabinet decided that the Assembly would be dissolved on November 19. After this, Mr. Kumar will tender his resignation to allow for the formation of the new government.
According to JD(U) leaders, the NDA Legislative Party will meet on November 19 to formally elect its leader, who will then submit the proposal to the Governor to form the new government. The oath-taking ceremony is scheduled for November 20 at Gandhi Maidan in Patna, and preparations at the venue are already underway. Authorities have reported heavy police deployment and have begun stage arrangements in anticipation of a large public ceremony.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony, along with senior BJP and NDA leaders, including union ministers and chief ministers from NDA-ruled states. BJP state president Dilip Kumar Jaiswal stated that all alliance legislators will gather on November 19 for the legislative party meeting before formally claiming the mandate from the Governor.
JD(U) leaders emphasized that this move reflects the strong mandate from the people. “Nitishji has recommended the dissolution of the Assembly on November 19,” said Vijay Kumar Choudhary after leaving Raj Bhavan. Umesh Singh Kushwaha, JD(U) state president, noted that voters have once again expressed their confidence in Mr. Kumar’s leadership following years of governance.
Smaller allies have voiced their continued support for the NDA. Santosh Kumar Suman, national president of Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular), confirmed that his party would remain part of the alliance and participate in the legislative meeting on November 19. Upendra Kushwaha of the Rashtriya Lok Morcha also welcomed the results, stating that good governance has prevailed.
BJP MLA Vijay Kumar Sinha praised the mandate as a rejection of what he termed the “politics of appeasement” and mentioned that the Prime Minister’s presence at the oath ceremony would be a point of pride for Bihar. With the NDA securing 202 seats in the 243-member Assembly—comprising 89 for the BJP and 85 for the JD(U)—the alliance comfortably surpasses the majority mark of 122.
As the state prepares for this transfer of power, all eyes will be on Gandhi Maidan on November 20 when Nitish Kumar is expected to take the oath as Chief Minister for what will be his tenth term.
