Sonipat-Delhi Metro Expansion to Benefit 50,000 Daily Commuters
The much-anticipated Sonipat-Delhi metro link is set to transform connectivity between the two cities, with a 26.5-km-long corridor featuring 21 stations. The project, being developed as part of Delhi Metro’s Phase 4 expansion, is expected to be completed by 2028 and will significantly ease commuting for around 50,000 passengers daily.
The metro line will extend from Rithala to Nathupur, passing through major areas such as Rohini, Bawana, and Narela. The inclusion of metro stations in Sonipat’s Kundli and Nathupur will offer a major boost to regional connectivity, particularly benefiting professionals and students traveling to Delhi.
Rapid Progress Amid Challenges
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation (HMRTC) are actively working to resolve key challenges, including land acquisition and technical hurdles. DS Dhesi, Principal Advisor to the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA), recently held a review meeting with stakeholders to assess progress and address critical issues like land acquisition, roadwork, and shifting of electricity poles. Officials are working diligently to streamline the project, ensuring it stays on schedule.
Project Cost and Funding Structure
The estimated cost of the Sonipat-Delhi metro extension stands at ₹6,230 crore. Of this, ₹5,685.22 crore will be allocated for the Delhi section, while ₹545.77 crore will cover the Haryana segment. The project is a joint initiative between the central and state governments, with Haryana bearing 80% of the cost and the central government covering 20%.
Economic and Social Impact
Beyond enhancing transportation, the metro expansion is expected to drive economic growth in Sonipat, transforming it into a major commercial and residential hub. The improved connectivity will attract new businesses, create job opportunities, and contribute to the overall development of the region.
Additionally, the project is designed with sustainability in mind, offering an environmentally friendly alternative to road transport. By reducing traffic congestion and lowering pollution levels, the metro will provide a cleaner and more efficient commuting option.
Ensuring Seamless Connectivity
A dedicated committee comprising HMRTC officials, municipal representatives, and district administration members has been formed to ensure smooth connectivity for the Nathupur metro station. The team is scheduled to visit the site by February 23 to address any potential accessibility concerns and enhance passenger convenience.
Completion Timeline
The metro line is expected to be fully operational by 2028, marking a significant milestone in regional connectivity. Once completed, the Sonipat-Delhi metro link will provide direct access to key areas, including Bawana, Narela, Nangloi, and Najafgarh, drastically cutting travel time and offering a hassle-free commuting experience.
The metro extension is a landmark project for both Delhi and Haryana, promising to reshape urban mobility while fostering economic and infrastructural growth. With rapid progress underway, the Sonipat-Delhi metro line is on track to redefine transit in the region, benefitting thousands of daily commuters for years to come.
