Parliament Passes Online Gaming Bill, Amit Shah Tables Key Reform Bills
The Monsoon Session of Parliament 2025 witnessed significant legislative developments as the Lok Sabha passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025, while Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced three major reform bills.
The Online Gaming Bill, passed amid strong opposition protests, seeks to regulate India’s growing digital gaming sector. It covers e-sports, educational games, social gaming, and real-money platforms such as poker. The bill ensures strict oversight of gaming platforms to prevent misuse, promote innovation, and safeguard users. According to officials, this is a crucial step in addressing concerns around addiction, fraud, and financial risks linked to online games.
In addition to this, Amit Shah introduced three significant bills in the Lok Sabha:
-
The Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill 2025
-
The Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill 2025
-
The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2025
The most notable among these is the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, which proposes to empower the President of India and Governors to remove elected representatives, including the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, Union Ministers, and Ministers of Union Territories, if they are detained on serious criminal charges for more than 30 days. This move, according to Shah, aims to bring greater accountability and strengthen democratic values.
The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill and the Union Territories (Amendment) Bill also focus on administrative efficiency, restructuring governance models, and ensuring better coordination between the Centre and local administrations.
Opposition members, however, strongly protested against the introduction of these bills, accusing the government of bypassing debate and rushing through legislation. The ruling party defended the move, saying that these laws are necessary for transparency and effective governance.
With the Online Gaming Bill 2025 already passed, the three new bills will be taken up for detailed debate in the coming days. Political analysts believe that these developments could have far-reaching impacts on governance, accountability, and India’s rapidly growing online gaming industry.
The Monsoon Session has thus far proved to be a turning point, showcasing the government’s determination to regulate modern industries while addressing pressing political and administrative challenges.
