AIIMS to Gurugram in Minutes: NHAI Plans 20-Km Elevated Corridor

Delhi commuters have reason to cheer as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced the construction of a 20-kilometre elevated corridor connecting AIIMS in Delhi to Gurugram. The new corridor is aimed at reducing travel time significantly, easing congestion, and providing a signal-free route between South Delhi and Gurugram.

The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) has already issued tenders for preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR). Once finalised, the corridor will connect AIIMS to the Mahipalpur Bypass and extend further to the Gurugram-Faridabad Road. According to initial plans, the elevated road will also provide smoother movement for traffic from South Delhi–Gurugram–Faridabad via Mahipalpur.

Features of the Elevated Corridor

The corridor will eliminate intersections and traffic signals, offering uninterrupted movement of vehicles. Designed to accommodate fast traffic, it will improve road safety, reduce travel delays, and provide a seamless commute for thousands of daily travellers between Delhi and Gurugram.

The project is expected to be completed within nine months, though NHAI has reserved the right to terminate the contract at the feasibility stage if the project is deemed unviable.

Feasibility Study Underway

Before the commencement of construction, a comprehensive feasibility study will be carried out. This includes traffic volume analysis, axle load surveys, alignment studies, topographical analysis, and lane configuration planning. Bidders interested in the project must submit their applications by October 15.

Political & Administrative Backing

After Rekha Gupta assumed office as Delhi’s Chief Minister, her administration pushed forward the proposal. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has assured that NHAI will undertake and execute this ambitious project.

The corridor is expected to bring major relief for commuters who often face long traffic snarls on the Delhi-Gurugram route, especially during peak hours.

Economic & Social Impact

Apart from cutting down travel time, the project is likely to boost economic activity by improving connectivity between Delhi and Gurugram, two of NCR’s busiest hubs. Easier access to healthcare facilities like AIIMS will also be a significant advantage.

What’s Next?

Once the DPR is prepared and feasibility confirmed, construction work will begin. If executed on schedule, the AIIMS–Gurugram elevated corridor could be a game-changer in Delhi-NCR’s road infrastructure, transforming daily commuting for lakhs of people.
