Army Day Parade 2025: A Historic First in Pune
For the first time in its history, the Indian Army’s prestigious Army Day Parade will be held outside of Delhi, making its debut in Pune, Maharashtra, on January 15, 2025. This landmark decision reflects the Army’s efforts to decentralize national military celebrations, foster a deeper connection with citizens, and showcase its contributions to various regions.
Why is Army Day Celebrated?
Army Day marks the historic moment when Lieutenant General K.M. Cariappa became the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army in 1949, succeeding British General Francis Roy Bucher. This day honors the valor, sacrifice, and dedication of Indian Army personnel who safeguard the nation’s sovereignty. Traditionally, the main parade took place in Delhi at the Cariappa Parade Ground, featuring displays of military might and cultural performances.
In recent years, the Army has expanded these celebrations beyond Delhi, holding the parade in Bengaluru in 2023 and Lucknow in 2024. Pune now joins this esteemed list, becoming the third city to host the event.
Why Pune?
Pune holds significant importance in India’s military history, making it an ideal host for the Army Day Parade. The city is home to the National Defence Academy (NDA) and the Southern Command Headquarters, both vital to the nation’s defense. Additionally, Pune’s association with the Maratha Empire underscores its deep-rooted military heritage. Hosting the parade in Pune not only honors the city’s contributions but also seeks to inspire the youth to join the armed forces.
The 2025 parade is set to take place at the Bombay Engineering Group (BEG) and Centre, highlighting modernization, inclusivity, and public engagement under the theme ‘Samarth Bharat, Saksham Sena’ (Strong India, Capable Army).
What’s Planned for 2025?
The parade will showcase indigenous defense equipment, including Arjun Mk-1A tanks, K9 Vajra howitzers, and advanced drones developed under the Make in India initiative. For the first time, robotic mules will participate, demonstrating cutting-edge technology in logistics.
Visitors will also witness live para-jumping demonstrations, combat drills, and vibrant cultural performances by Army bands. A special highlight will be the participation of a 33-member Nepal Army band, symbolizing camaraderie between the two nations.
Women at the Forefront
This year’s parade celebrates gender inclusivity, featuring an all-girl marching contingent from the National Cadet Corps (NCC) and an all-women contingent of Agniveers from the Corps of Military Police, led by Captain Sandhya Mahla.
Other Highlights
The parade will include tableaux celebrating the Army’s Mission Olympics Wing, green initiatives, technological advancements, and efforts to achieve net-zero emissions.
As Army Day 2025 unfolds in Pune, it stands as a tribute to the nation’s defenders, celebrating their achievements and inspiring the next generation.
