Delhi CM Candidate Announcement Highlights: Rekha Gupta to Lead BJP Government

In a historic shift in Delhi’s political landscape, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has officially claimed the right to form the government in the National Capital, following a decisive victory in the February 2025 Delhi Assembly elections. Rekha Gupta, a first-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Shalimar Bagh, has been appointed as the new Chief Minister of Delhi. Along with Gupta, six other cabinet members met with Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena at Raj Niwas on Wednesday night, seeking official approval to assume power.

Rekha Gupta: The New Face of Delhi’s BJP Government

Gupta’s appointment as Chief Minister marks a significant moment for the BJP in Delhi, as the party returns to power after a gap of 27 years. The BJP secured a commanding 44 out of 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly, paving the way for its dominance in the region. In a strategic move to balance experience with youth, Gupta’s cabinet will include both seasoned politicians and emerging leaders within the BJP.

Key Appointments in the New Delhi Cabinet

One of the highlights of the new government is the appointment of Parvesh Verma, the MLA from New Delhi, as the Deputy Chief Minister. Verma is a prominent figure in Delhi’s BJP leadership and is expected to play a crucial role in the administration. Meanwhile, Rohini MLA Vijender Gupta has been named the Speaker of the Delhi Assembly, reflecting the BJP’s commitment to strengthening its legislative presence in the Capital.

Swearing-In Ceremony at Ramlila Maidan

The official swearing-in ceremony for the new Chief Minister and her cabinet is scheduled for February 20, 2025, at the iconic Ramlila Maidan in central Delhi. The event is anticipated to attract a large crowd, with estimates ranging between 25,000 and 30,000 attendees, including prominent Hindu seers, community leaders, and BJP supporters from across the region. 

The swearing-in will carry significant symbolism, reflecting the theme of the Ram Mandir consecration in Ayodhya. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and several other senior BJP leaders, are expected to attend the ceremony.

BJP’s Strategy: A Mix of Youth and Experience

As the BJP prepares to govern Delhi, the party’s leadership has focused on assembling a cabinet that embodies a blend of youth and experience. In addition to Rekha Gupta, several other names are being discussed for key cabinet positions, including Ashish Sood, Satish Upadhyay, and Shikha Roy. The BJP’s cabinet selection will likely ensure representation from diverse caste and community groups, strengthening its hold on various segments of Delhi’s electorate.

With the announcement of Rekha Gupta as the new Chief Minister, the BJP aims to consolidate its power in Delhi, heralding a new era of governance in the National Capital.
