CBSE Mandates CCTV in All Affiliated Schools
New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a directive making it mandatory for all affiliated schools to install CCTV cameras at crucial points across their campuses. The move aims to ensure the safety and well-being of students, especially in common areas.
The updated provision has been included in Chapter 4 of the CBSE affiliation bylaws, which deal with infrastructure standards. Cameras must be placed at entry and exit points, lobbies, corridors, staircases, classrooms, laboratories, libraries, canteens, storerooms, and playgrounds. However, installation in toilets and washrooms remains strictly prohibited.
The CBSE circular, signed by Secretary Himanshu Gupta, also specifies that the cameras must have audio-visual recording features and be connected to storage systems that retain footage for a minimum of 15 days. Schools are expected to maintain backups and produce them to the authorities when required.
This mandate aligns with the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) guidelines, which stress the importance of creating a safe school environment, protecting children from bullying, abuse, and other threats.
Regular monitoring and maintenance of the CCTV systems are also necessary to meet the new compliance standards. Non-adherence may affect the school’s affiliation status with the board.
The step is being widely welcomed as a much-needed move toward ensuring safety in educational institutions, especially in the wake of recent concerns regarding campus security.
