CTET May Become Mandatory for Classes 9 to 12

In a major policy shift, the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) may soon become mandatory for teaching Classes 9 to 12. Currently, CTET is only required for teaching Classes 1 to 8.

As per media reports, the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), in consultation with CBSE, is preparing new draft guidelines to include a senior secondary level CTET. This change aligns with the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes improving teacher quality at all school levels.

Under current rules, teachers of Classes 9 to 12 need a B.Ed degree and post-graduate qualification. However, the new policy will add a compulsory CTET qualification as well.

Officials say the delay in the CTET 2025 notification is due to syllabus restructuring, eligibility revision, and pending government approvals. Once finalized, the new CTET level will cover CBSE-affiliated institutions including Kendriya Vidyalayas, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, and private schools.

CTET Director JK Yadav confirmed that future exams will be conducted at four levels once NCTE guidelines are approved. The changes are expected to roll out by next year.

This move is expected to bring better standardization and ensure that only well-qualified candidates teach at higher secondary levels.
