Ministry of Education to Introduce AI Curriculum from Class 3 Onwards
The Ministry of Education has announced a significant advancement in future-ready learning: Artificial Intelligence (AI) will now be taught in all schools starting from Class 3. This new curriculum aims to introduce young learners to the basics of AI and computational thinking from the foundational level.
According to the Ministry, this initiative represents a crucial step toward ensuring the ethical and meaningful use of AI in addressing real-world challenges. It will also encourage students to think critically, innovate, and utilize technology for the public good.
The AI curriculum will be developed by a special expert committee formed by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). This committee will be chaired by Professor Karthik Raman from IIT Madras, one of the country’s leading institutes for technology and innovation.
A stakeholder consultation was recently held in New Delhi, bringing together experts from the CBSE, NCERT, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), and other educational institutions. The aim was to align the new curriculum with global standards while ensuring it fits well within the framework of India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
At the event, Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of the Department of School Education and Literacy, emphasized that AI education should be regarded as a fundamental skill, similar to reading, writing, or arithmetic. He mentioned that this subject would help children understand “the world around us” in a more interconnected and digital manner.
The Ministry also noted that AI and computational thinking would not solely focus on coding or machines but would also foster creativity, problem-solving, and responsible decision-making among students.
With this initiative, India is joining a growing number of countries that are introducing AI education at the school level to prepare students for the future job market and promote innovation from an early age. This new step by the Ministry of Education promises to shape the next generation into informed, ethical, and technology-driven citizens ready to lead in the age of Artificial Intelligence.
