HDFC Bank Confirms No Change in Savings Account Minimum Balance; AMB Remains ₹10,000
HDFC Bank has clarified that it has not changed the minimum balance requirements for its savings accounts, dismissing reports that suggested higher amounts for new account holders in metro and urban branches. The bank confirmed that the Average Monthly Balance (AMB) for the Regular Savings Account remains ₹10,000, while the Savings Max Account continues to require ₹25,000.
In its official statement, HDFC Bank emphasized that it offers multiple savings account variants tailored to different customer profiles, each with its own AMB requirement based on the value-added services provided. “There has been no change in the Average Monthly Balance requirement for any account type,” the bank said.
Account Variants and Requirements
The Regular Savings Account AMB remains ₹10,000 for urban branches, ₹5,000 for semi-urban branches, and ₹2,500 for rural branches. Alternatively, customers can maintain a fixed deposit instead of the AMB — ₹1 lakh FD for urban branches, ₹50,000 FD for semi-urban branches, and ₹25,000 FD for rural branches. All fixed deposits must have a minimum tenure of one year and one day.
The Savings Max Account, available across all branch categories, requires an AMB of ₹25,000. Metro branches, where customer activity is typically higher, often prioritize offering the Savings Max variant to new customers.
Eligibility for a Regular Savings Account
The account can be opened by:
-
Resident individuals (single or joint)
-
Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs)
-
Foreign nationals residing in India for over 180 days*
-
Minors above 10 years of age (self-operated minor accounts with ATM/debit card facility)
Foreign nationals must provide a valid passport, a valid visa, an FRRO certificate, and a residential permit.
Opening a Regular Savings Account
According to the bank’s website, opening a Regular Savings Account requires a minimum initial deposit of ₹10,000 for urban branches, ₹5,000 for semi-urban branches, and ₹2,500 for rural branches.
Customer Reassurance
This clarification reassures HDFC Bank customers that their existing account requirements remain intact, offering consistency and flexibility across different branch locations.
With the AMB structure unchanged, customers can continue to choose the savings account variant that best matches their banking needs without concerns over sudden changes to balance requirements.
