SGT University Hosts Lecture on Horror, Crime & Media Narratives

On April 10, 2025, the Department of Liberal Studies and Social Sciences at the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Liberal Arts, SGT University, hosted a captivating public lecture titled “Horror in the Digital Age: Sensationalism and the Politics of Narration in Crime Documentaries.” This intellectually enriching session was organized in collaboration with the Balvant Parekh Centre for General Semantics and Other Human Sciences and aligned with the broader academic theme of “Media, Propaganda, and Social Control.”

The lecture was delivered by the distinguished Dr. Asmita Kundu, an Academic Fellow at the Balvant Parekh Centre in Baroda. With a scholarly background in crime narrative, crime fiction, literary history, and cultural studies, Dr. Kundu provided deep insights into the evolving landscape of true crime media. She examined how crime documentaries—widely consumed across digital platforms—reflect societal anxieties while subtly reinforcing dominant ideologies.

Dr. Kundu focused on how digital media has transformed horror and crime into spectacles, capitalizing on sensationalism and shaping public perception. She critically analyzed the politics of narration in these documentaries, making her lecture a compelling intersection of media literacy and cultural critique.

Beyond the academic dialogue, the event sparked meaningful conversations about future collaborations. The post-lecture discussions indicated potential pathways for formalizing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Balvant Parekh Centre. This partnership could provide SGT students with internship opportunities, knowledge exchange programs, and joint research initiatives. These developments are especially significant for students pursuing English studies, behavioral sciences, and social sciences, offering them hands-on engagement in contemporary media studies.

The lecture was well-attended by faculty members, research scholars, and students, all of whom appreciated the nuanced understanding and real-world relevance presented during the session. The event reaffirmed SGT University’s commitment to interdisciplinary academic engagement and the fostering of global scholarly networks.
