Heavy Rains Disrupt Mumbai, Red Alert Issued by IMD
Mumbai witnessed a fresh spell of extremely heavy rainfall on August 18, 2025, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for the city and surrounding regions. In just 6–8 hours, the city recorded 177 mm of rainfall, causing severe waterlogging in multiple areas and disrupting normal life.
Following the warning, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) ordered the closure of all schools and colleges in Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar. Government offices also remained closed, while private companies were requested to allow employees to work from home.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis addressed the situation, urging citizens to stay safe and avoid unnecessary travel. He assured that all necessary precautions were being taken to handle the emergency and that rescue teams were on high alert.
The rainfall also severely impacted air travel. IndiGo Airlines issued a travel advisory for passengers flying out of Mumbai, cautioning them about possible flight delays and cancellations due to waterlogged routes leading to the airport. Several other airlines faced operational challenges as well, with sluggish traffic making it difficult for passengers to reach the terminals on time.
The IMD forecast predicted that extremely heavy rainfall may continue in isolated areas of Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad. With high tide conditions expected, authorities urged residents living in low-lying areas to remain alert and avoid venturing out unless necessary.
Despite the disruptions, disaster management teams and civic officials worked round the clock to clear waterlogged roads and ensure quick response to emergencies. The rainfall on August 18 once again highlighted Mumbai’s long-standing battle with monsoon flooding, which has become a recurring challenge for the financial capital.
Authorities have advised citizens to stay connected with official updates, follow advisories, and check flight statuses through airline apps and websites before heading out.
