Sikkim Inaugurates India’s First Digital Nomad Village in Yakten
In a landmark initiative blending technology and sustainable tourism, India’s first Digital Nomad Village has been officially inaugurated in Yakten village of Pakyong district, Sikkim. The unique project was inaugurated by Pamin Lepcha, MLA and Advisor for the Women, Child, Senior Citizen, and Divyangjan Welfare Department, making Sikkim a pioneer in promoting digital tourism and modern work lifestyles.
Named “Nomad Sikkim”, the initiative is a collaborative effort between the Pakyong district administration and Sarvahitey NGO. It aims to create a self-sustaining hub for digital nomads — professionals who work remotely while traveling to different locations — by offering both high-speed internet and a serene natural setting.

This village caters to the growing number of remote professionals seeking a peaceful yet connected environment to work from. Equipped with reliable high-speed Wi-Fi networks, Yakten is designed to support work-from-anywhere models without compromising on lifestyle quality. The environment encourages a sustainable and community-driven work culture, with a strong focus on eco-friendly practices and local livelihood support.
The Digital Nomad Village is already welcoming its first set of residents. These digital workers get the opportunity to work amidst the Himalayan serenity while being part of a social-impact-driven ecosystem. Whether it’s startup founders, tech workers, writers, or content creators, the village provides a refreshing change from crowded cities and conventional office spaces.
By promoting Yakten as a remote work destination, the government also aims to boost local employment through hospitality, food services, transportation, and cultural exchange programs. It brings together technology, tourism, and social welfare — a powerful trifecta in today’s globalized, digital economy.
With Nomad Sikkim, India steps into the future of work — one that is flexible, sustainable, and rooted in community values. This project could serve as a blueprint for similar digital-friendly rural destinations across the country.
As work-life dynamics evolve post-pandemic, India’s first Digital Nomad Village is more than just a place — it’s a movement towards reimagining how and where we work.
