Trump Hikes Tariffs on Indian Goods to 50%

In a sharp escalation of trade tensions, US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to impose an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, raising the total import duty to 50% on several products. This decision comes shortly after Trump’s earlier 25% tariff order on July 31, citing India’s continued import of Russian oil.

The latest tariff will come into effect in two phases—first part from August 7 and the rest after 21 days. Trump said that India’s trade practices and oil imports from Russia violate the spirit of fair international trade.

India has strongly opposed the decision. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) called the move “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable.” The ministry emphasized that India began importing oil from Russia only after traditional suppliers diverted to Europe due to the Ukraine war. Moreover, India claims that the US itself had encouraged such imports to stabilize global energy markets.

During a press interaction, Trump hinted at more action ahead, saying, “It’s only been 8 hours. You’ll see a lot more… secondary sanctions coming.”

India is currently reviewing the impact of these new tariffs on exports, especially in sectors like textiles, chemicals, and food products. Exemptions remain for specific sectors like steel, aluminium, and pharmaceuticals.

This development is expected to strain India-US trade relations further, even as officials from both sides are exploring diplomatic solutions.
