North India Workshop on Developmental Supportive Care and Neuroprotection in NICU Held at SGT University

The Department of Pediatrics at the Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences, SGT University, successfully organized a North India Workshop on “Developmental Supportive Care (DSC) in Preemies and Neuroprotection in NICU: Strategies for Neonatal Integrative Developmental Care.” This event brought together healthcare professionals to enhance their knowledge and skills in providing specialized care for preterm infants.

Understanding Developmental Supportive Care and Neuroprotection

Preterm infants are at a higher risk of neurodevelopmental impairments due to their underdeveloped brains and exposure to various stressors in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The workshop emphasized DSC strategies aimed at reducing these stressors, which include pain and noise management, optimizing nutrition, promoting skin-to-skin contact (kangaroo care), and fostering an enriched sensory environment to support brain development and improve long-term outcomes.

Workshop Objectives

The primary goal of the workshop was to raise awareness and encourage the adoption of DSC and neuroprotection strategies among healthcare professionals. The event focused on:

– Educating attendees about evidence-based practices for neonatal integrative developmental care.

– Emphasizing the importance of minimizing stressors to support neurodevelopment and improve outcomes for preterm infants.

– Promoting a multidisciplinary, family-centered approach to neonatal care.

– Highlighting the significance of kangaroo care, pain management, optimized nutrition, and sensory regulation in promoting brain development in preterm infants.
