Fauja Singh, 114-Year-Old Marathon Icon, Dies in Road Accident
The world is mourning the loss of Fauja Singh, the legendary 114-year-old marathon runner, who tragically passed away following a road accident on July 14, 2025. Affectionately known as the “Turbaned Tornado,” Singh was hit by an unidentified vehicle while crossing the road near his home village of Beas Pind in Jalandhar district, Punjab, around 3:30 pm. He was rushed to a private hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Born on April 1, 1911, Fauja Singh became a global icon not only for his age-defying athleticism but also for his inspirational story of perseverance and passion. He began running marathons at the age of 89 and shot to international fame in 2011 when he completed the Toronto Waterfront Marathon at the age of 100, becoming the oldest person to ever finish a full marathon.
Even after retiring from competitive running at 101, Fauja Singh remained an inspirational figure, advocating for fitness, vegetarianism, and a positive outlook on life. His journey was celebrated in documentaries, news stories, and global marathon events where he was often invited as a guest of honor.
Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria expressed heartfelt condolences, stating, “Fauja Singh was a symbol of resilience and discipline. His passing is a huge loss not just for Punjab but for the global sporting community. We are deeply saddened.”
Singh’s achievements included setting multiple age-group records in distances ranging from 5K to full marathons. He became a beacon of hope for senior citizens, proving that age is truly just a number.
