Malamaal Weekly 2 Takes Shape With Star-Studded Cast
The much-loved comedy franchise Malamaal Weekly is reportedly heading back to the big screen, with Malamaal Weekly 2 slowly taking shape. The upcoming sequel is said to feature Riteish Deshmukh, Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav, and Elvish Yadav in the principal cast, bringing together familiar comedy talent with a new face for the franchise.
According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, Riteish Deshmukh is expected to headline the film, although he is still going through the script and has not officially signed on yet. The actors have reportedly given verbal confirmation, while the formal paperwork is still in process. If finalised, the project will reunite Riteish, Paresh Rawal and Rajpal Yadav, with Elvish Yadav joining them as a fresh addition.
The film will be directed by Amit Joshi, who previously co-directed Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, starring Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon. Joshi is currently working on the script, and the sequel is expected to go on floors by November 2026.
Unlike a direct continuation of the original story, Malamaal Weekly 2 is expected to introduce a completely new plot. However, the makers plan to retain the flavour that made the first film popular — ordinary small-town characters, financial struggles, sudden wealth, greed and the comic confusion that follows.
The original Malamaal Weekly, directed by Priyadarshan, was released in 2006 and became a commercial success. The story revolved around Lilaram, a lottery ticket seller who tries to claim a winning lottery ticket after its owner dies. His plan quickly becomes complicated when other villagers discover the money and begin trying to get their share.
The film was later remade in Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, with Priyadarshan also directing the Malayalam version. Now, nearly two decades after the original, the sequel is looking to bring a new generation of actors and audiences into the same world of chaotic comedy.
If the reported cast and plans move ahead as expected, Malamaal Weekly 2 could offer audiences a fresh comedy while keeping the spirit of the original alive. With shooting expected to begin later this year, more details about the story and remaining cast are likely to emerge as the project moves forward.
