Heavy Rain Lashes Delhi, Causes Severe Waterlogging

New Delhi was hit by heavy overnight rains on July 31, 2025, leading to widespread waterlogging and severe traffic congestion. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Delhi-NCR and parts of Haryana, warning of more rainfall and thunderstorms throughout the day.

Key roads like ITO, Naraina, Dhaula Kuan, Nehru Place, and Zakhira underpass were submerged, leaving thousands of office-goers stranded in traffic jams. Social media was flooded with images and videos showing knee-deep water, jammed vehicles, and flooded underpasses.

According to the IMD, Delhi will see a maximum temperature of 30.1°C and humidity as high as 82%, with wind speeds reaching 17.6 km/h. A 95% probability of rain remains in effect, with visibility reduced to 8.6 km.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta acknowledged the repeated issue of urban flooding and stated, “The government is fast-tracking work on modern drainage systems, real-time monitoring, and rapid response units to provide a long-term solution.”

The government has already begun identifying low-lying areas that regularly face waterlogging. A city-wide plan is underway to upgrade infrastructure and drainage to better handle future monsoon conditions.

Residents are advised to stay indoors where possible and avoid underpasses and waterlogged zones. Emergency services are on high alert, with pumps and crews deployed in the worst-hit regions.

While the rain offered temporary relief from the heat, the capital’s aging drainage systems once again proved inadequate. With the monsoon season still ongoing, more challenges may lie ahead unless immediate infrastructure upgrades are put in place.
