India Post To Discontinue Registered Post From September 1
In a major transition, India Post has announced that its Registered Post service will be discontinued from September 1, 2025. The iconic service, trusted for over five decades for delivering legal notices, government documents, and job offers, will be integrated into the Speed Post system.
According to official data, the use of Registered Post has declined significantly, with a 25% drop from 244.4 million items in 2011–12 to 184.6 million in 2019–20. This is largely due to the rise of digital communication and private courier services.
The merger aims to improve operational efficiency, delivery speed, and tracking accuracy. Speed Post, launched in 1986, is positioned to carry forward the reliability of Registered Post while embracing a more modern delivery model.
However, concerns are being raised about affordability. Speed Post services start at ₹41 for 50 grams, compared to ₹25.96 for Registered Post. This price hike could impact rural communities and small traders who rely on postal services for legal documentation and business needs.
Despite these concerns, the Postal Department has directed all courts, banks, and government bodies to transition to Speed Post before September 1. Key features like delivery tracking and acknowledgment receipts will remain available in the merged system.
For many, this marks the end of a nostalgic era. Registered Post, rooted in colonial times, had become a symbol of trust for millions across India.
