NCERT Introduces Chapters on Indian War Heroes in School Syllabus

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has announced the inclusion of new chapters on three of India’s most celebrated war heroes in the upcoming academic year’s school curriculum. The stories of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Brigadier Mohammad Usman, and Major Somnath Sharma will now be part of the syllabus for Class VIII (Urdu), Class VII (Urdu), and Class VIII (English), respectively.

The Ministry of Defence said the initiative aims to provide students with inspiring narratives of courage, dedication, and sacrifice. These stories are expected to foster patriotism and instill a sense of duty among young learners.

Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, known as the architect of India’s 1971 victory in the Bangladesh Liberation War, remains one of the most iconic figures in Indian military history. Brigadier Mohammad Usman, often called the “Lion of Nowshera,” made the ultimate sacrifice during the 1947–48 India-Pakistan war. Major Somnath Sharma, the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, is remembered for his heroics during the Battle of Badgam in 1947.

Defence officials believe these chapters will serve as an educational bridge between history and moral values, inspiring students to understand the importance of service to the nation. The Ministry of Education has worked closely with NCERT to ensure that the content is age-appropriate and engaging.

Teachers and educationists have welcomed the move, stating that such inclusions make the curriculum more relatable and motivational, connecting textbook learning with real-life examples of leadership and bravery.
