PM Modi Visits Manipur After 28 Months, Unveils ₹8,500 Crore Projects
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Manipur on Saturday, September 13, 2025, for the first time since the ethnic violence erupted in May 2023. This much-awaited visit comes after 28 months, during which the state witnessed severe unrest between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, resulting in the loss of over 250 lives and the displacement of more than 60,000 people.
Imphal and Churachandpur were heavily decked up and fortified with security arrangements ahead of the Prime Minister’s arrival. Mr. Modi first reached Churachandpur, where he interacted with internally displaced people (IDPs) and addressed a large gathering at Peace Ground. Civil society groups and the local population extended a warm welcome, showcasing traditional attire and cultural unity.
The Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for multiple projects worth over ₹7,300 crore in Churachandpur, including the Manipur Urban Roads, drainage, and asset management improvement project worth ₹3,600 crore, five national highway projects worth ₹2,500 crore, the Manipur Infotech Development (MIND) project, and working women’s hostels at nine locations across the state.
Later in the afternoon, Mr. Modi arrived in Imphal and addressed a crowd of nearly 15,000 people at Kangla Fort, a site of great cultural and political importance. Here, he inaugurated development projects worth over ₹1,200 crore, including the Civil Secretariat, IT SEZ building, and police headquarters at Mantripukhri, as well as Ima markets—unique all-women markets—in four districts.
The visit was met with mixed emotions across the state. While Churachandpur displayed enthusiasm and hope for peace, many in Imphal remained sceptical about concrete outcomes. A BJP legislator expressed optimism that the visit would pave the way for development and business revival, while Manipur Congress president K. Meghachandra Singh criticised the timing, calling it “symbolic” and urging for a concrete peace roadmap.
The Kuki-Zo Council, however, termed the visit a “new chapter of hope” and encouraged people to welcome the Prime Minister in large numbers. Meanwhile, the state continues to remain under President’s Rule since February 2025, with security forces deployed in buffer zones and weapons recovery operations underway.
Prime Minister Modi, in his message on X, assured that the government is fully committed to ensuring the inclusive and holistic development of Manipur. His visit has raised expectations for both peace and progress in a state that has long struggled with deep ethnic divisions.
