India-Canada Academic Ties Deepen with 13 University Agreements
New Delhi: India and Canada have taken a major step toward strengthening bilateral academic cooperation with the signing of 13 new university agreements focused on research, hybrid campuses, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) centres of excellence.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the new talent partnerships during an academic mission to India. In a post on X, he stated that Canadian universities are launching 13 new agreements in India that will provide invaluable international exposure to students and further strengthen world-class institutions in both countries.
The agreements aim to enhance collaborative research, establish hybrid campus models, and create AI-focused centres that will boost innovation-driven education. The partnerships are expected to promote academic mobility, joint research initiatives, and industry-linked programs, benefiting students and faculty across borders.
McGill University to Launch AI Centre in India
As part of this academic collaboration, McGill University announced the establishment of a new Centre of Excellence in AI Education and Research in India. The initiative marks a significant milestone in expanding the university’s global footprint.
The announcement was made during an academic mission led by Universities Canada, attended by Prime Minister Mark Carney and Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anita Anand.
According to the university, the Centre is scheduled to launch in May 2027 and will welcome its first batch of students in Fall 2027. The inaugural cohort will begin with 50 students, with plans to gradually expand enrollment to approximately 200 students.
Focus on Applied Learning and Industry Engagement
The Centre will offer a master’s program in Artificial Intelligence designed to combine strong academic foundations with practical, industry-oriented learning. Students will work on real-world technological challenges aligned with emerging AI trends.
This development reflects a broader commitment by both India and Canada to invest in cutting-edge research, digital transformation, and talent development in AI. The strengthened academic ties are expected to pave the way for deeper cooperation in science, technology, and innovation.
The 13 agreements collectively mark a new chapter in India-Canada educational relations, reinforcing shared goals of knowledge exchange, global exposure, and future-ready skills development. b
