India Launches First Digital Census Exercise For 2027

India has officially launched the first phase of Census 2027, marking the start of the world’s largest population data collection effort. This will be the 16th Census in India’s history and the 8th since gaining Independence, introducing digital innovations.

The Census will be conducted in two phases: House Listing Operations (HLO) and Population Enumeration (PE). The reference date for most of the country is set for March 1, 2027, while snow-bound regions such as Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand will use October 1, 2026, as their reference date.

For the first time, citizens can participate through a digital self-enumeration process, which will be available until mid-April. This secure web-based system allows individuals to submit their details online in 16 languages before the traditional door-to-door survey begins.

The House Listing phase, scheduled from April 16 to May 15, will involve recording information about all buildings, housing conditions, and household amenities. It will also include geo-tagging of structures and assigning unique identification numbers to ensure better accuracy and transparency.

States and Union Territories such as Goa, Karnataka, Odisha, Sikkim, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are among those that will undertake the initial operations.

The second phase, Population Enumeration, is set to take place in February 2027 and will include the collection of caste-based data. The government has allocated over ₹11,718 crore for the entire exercise.

According to Mritunjay Kumar Narayan, robust data security measures have been put in place to protect citizens’ information. He has urged the public to provide accurate details to ensure reliable national data.

The digital Census 2027 represents a significant step towards modern governance, facilitating efficient planning and policy-making for the future.
