PM Modi Launches ‘Mission Mausam’ to Build a Weather-Ready and Climate-Smart India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched “Mission Mausam” on Monday during the 150th foundation day celebrations of the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This initiative aims to transform India into a “weather-ready” and “climate-smart” nation by utilizing advanced weather forecasting and climate change adaptation technologies.

At the event, PM Modi also introduced the IMD Vision-2047 document, which serves as a strategic roadmap for enhancing India’s climate resilience and addressing climate change. The document outlines comprehensive plans for modernizing weather forecasting and management systems by incorporating next-generation radars, satellites, high-resolution atmospheric observation systems, and advanced computing infrastructure.

In his speech, the Prime Minister emphasized the significance of preparedness in mitigating the impacts of extreme weather events and climate change. He stated, “Mission Mausam is a step toward making India more resilient to weather uncertainties while safeguarding our environment for future generations.”

The initiative also aims to advance the understanding of weather and climate processes, enabling better strategies for air quality management and long-term weather interventions. Key features include real-time air quality monitoring and improved public access to weather-related data, which will empower both citizens and institutions.

The IMD’s 150th anniversary celebrations featured workshops, exhibitions, and discussions that highlighted the department’s contributions to India’s climate resilience. These events underscored the IMD’s role in delivering accurate and timely weather services to various sectors, including agriculture, aviation, and disaster management.

Union Minister for Earth Sciences, Kiren Rijiju, praised the IMD’s achievements, stating, “Over the past 150 years, the IMD has consistently served the nation by providing reliable weather forecasts, enabling India to mitigate risks and plan effectively.”

“Mission Mausam” highlights India’s commitment to combating climate challenges through technology and innovation, paving the way for a sustainable and secure future.
