Massive Explosion at J&K Police Station Leaves 8 Injured
A major explosion occurred inside the Nowgam police station in Srinagar late Friday night, injuring at least eight people, three of them critically, officials confirmed. The blast happened around 11:20 p.m. and ignited a massive fire that engulfed the building and several vehicles parked on the premises.
According to early reports, a joint team from the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Forensic Science Laboratory was examining large quantities of explosives that had been seized during a recent inter-state terror crackdown. Among the confiscated materials was ammonium nitrate, which officials believe may have triggered the explosion.
The injured individuals, many suffering from severe burn injuries, were rushed to nearby hospitals in Srinagar for urgent treatment. Firefighters arrived on the scene promptly to control the blaze caused by the explosion.
Just days earlier, the J&K Police had uncovered a terror module operating across multiple states. During coordinated raids in Faridabad, Haryana, and other regions, authorities seized nearly 2,900 kg of materials used for making improvised explosive devices (IEDs), including ammonium nitrate.
Police sources indicated that the explosive materials had been stored inside the Nowgam police station as part of ongoing investigations. However, the exact cause of the blast—whether it was accidental or deliberate—has not yet been confirmed.
The investigation was initiated in October when police discovered pro-Jaish-e-Muhammad posters in the area, leading to the arrest of seven residents. Further questioning resulted in the arrest of two doctors—Dr. Adeel Ahmad Rather and Dr. Muzamil Ahmad Ganaie, also known as Musaib, were allegedly involved in supporting the terror module.
Authorities claim that the arrested individuals were responsible for fundraising, logistical support, and the procurement of bomb-making materials for the group. The module reportedly intended to target key locations across the states.
Authorities are now investigating whether the blast was a result of mishandling the seized explosives or if it was an internal sabotage attempt. More details are expected as forensic teams continue to examine the site.
