Shubman Gill Creates History with Record Test Win at Edgbaston

NEW DELHI: In a stunning display of leadership and batting brilliance, Shubman Gill etched his name into cricketing history as he led India to a record-breaking 336-run victory against England in the second Test at Edgbaston. At just 25 years and 301 days, Gill has now become the youngest Indian captain to win a Test overseas, breaking Sunil Gavaskar’s 1976 record.

The triumph, India’s first-ever win at Edgbaston, also marked their largest overseas victory by runs, surpassing the 318-run win over West Indies in 2019. The win helped India level the five-match series 1-1.

Gill’s performance was nothing short of monumental. The stylish right-hander smashed a magnificent 269 in the first innings and followed it up with a blistering 161 in the second, making him the first batter in Test history to score both 250 and 150 in a single match. This feat follows his 147-run knock in the opening Test at Headingley.

With 585 runs in just two Tests at an average of 146.25, Gill is now chasing the legendary Don Bradman’s record of 974 runs in a single Test series — a record that has stood since 1930.

Speaking after the match, a calm yet proud Gill said, “Especially when you are the captain, you need to lead by example… so whenever another player is in that situation, you can guide them with confidence.” His determination was evident: “If a good ball gets me out, it gets me out. But while I’m in, I want to play as long as I can.”

Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep played crucial roles in decimating the English batting line-up, providing Gill with the perfect support as captain. His leadership has not only helped fill the void left by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli but also launched a new era for Indian Test cricket.

India now heads to Lord’s for the third Test on July 10, aiming to continue the momentum. All eyes will remain on Shubman Gill, as fans and critics alike watch this young captain possibly create more history.
