Earthquake Jolts Delhi-NCR, Panic Grips Residents

A strong tremor jolted Delhi and its surrounding regions on Thursday morning as a 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck Jhajjar in Haryana at around 9:04 a.m. According to the National Centre for Seismology, the quake originated at a depth of 10 km, sparking panic among residents across the Delhi-NCR region.

The tremors were strongly felt in Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, and parts of western Uttar Pradesh, including Meerut and Shamli — nearly 200 km away from the epicentre. In many households, fans and light fixtures swayed, prompting people to rush out into open spaces. Offices were also affected, as computers and chairs shook, and employees evacuated the buildings as a safety precaution.

Eyewitnesses reported confusion and urgency as people hurriedly exited apartments and workplaces. Several took to social media to share their experience, with many noting the unusually long duration of the tremor.

Shortly after the quake, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) issued an advisory urging people not to panic. The advisory advised residents to take the stairs while exiting, avoid elevators, and move to open spaces. For those driving during the tremor, the NDRF recommended pulling over safely in an open area.

No injuries or major damage have been reported so far, but authorities are continuing to monitor the situation. Seismologists are also analyzing whether aftershocks are likely.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of earthquake preparedness in northern India, a region that falls under seismic zone IV, making it susceptible to moderate to severe quakes.

As updates continue to come in, citizens are urged to remain alert, follow official advisories, and check the National Centre for Seismology website or trusted news sources for further information.
