Indian Navy evacuates injured sailor from hijacked ship

NEW DELHI: Indian destroyer INS Kochi has evacuated one of the 18 sailors on board the hijacked commercial vessel MV Ruen for urgent medical attention after he was injured in firing by the pirates, even as another warship INS Kolkata has now reached the Gulf of Aden.

The injured sailor, a Bulgarian national who has a gunshot injury near his shoulder, was evacuated to INS Kochi off the coast of Somalia in the early hours of Monday after negotiations with the pirates on the hijacked Malta-flagged bulk carrier.

The sailor had sustained injuries during the piracy incident but was reported to be stable. Towards ensuring his safety, the Indian warship was successful in ensuring his release by the hijackers,” an officer said on Tuesday.
