Nitish Kumar Announces Free Power, Solar Boost Ahead of Polls
In a major announcement ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar declared that all eligible domestic electricity consumers will receive free power for up to 125 units starting August 1, 2025. The initiative, which will reflect in the July billing cycle, is expected to benefit nearly 1.67 crore families across the state.
Announcing social media platform X, Kumar stated, “We have been providing electricity at affordable rates from the beginning. Now, from August 1, domestic consumers will not have to pay anything for consumption up to 125 units.”
In a parallel move toward renewable energy, the Bihar government will also facilitate the installation of solar power plants on rooftops or nearby public spaces for domestic users over the next three years. The Chief Minister emphasized that for extremely poor families, the state government will cover the full cost under the Kutir Jyoti scheme, while others will receive appropriate financial support.
Kumar highlighted that these measures are designed not only to reduce the financial burden on households but also to accelerate the state’s shift toward clean energy. He estimated that Bihar could generate up to 10,000 megawatts of solar energy within the next three years.
“This step ensures that families no longer worry about their basic power needs and also contributes to a sustainable future,” he added.
The announcement is seen as a strategic electoral move aimed at securing voter support ahead of the state polls scheduled later this year. On the same note, Kumar also directed the Education Department to expedite the Teacher Recruitment Examination (TRE) 4, ensuring that government school vacancies are filled without delay.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to 35% reservation for women in teacher recruitment, limited to candidates who are residents of Bihar.
As the state gears up for elections, these announcements from Nitish Kumar underline a policy focus on welfare, employment, and infrastructure, combining immediate benefits with long-term goals of sustainability and inclusive development.
