Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Attacked During Public Event, Police Detain Accused

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was allegedly attacked on Wednesday during a public grievance hearing (Jan Sunvai) at her Civil Lines residence. The incident triggered confusion, with initial reports claiming the CM was slapped and her hair pulled, while BJP leaders later termed it a “mishap.”

According to officials in the CM’s office, Gupta was meeting citizens when a man approached her, handed over a paper, and began hurling abuses before allegedly slapping her. Security personnel quickly overpowered him and handed him over to the police. The accused is currently being interrogated at the Civil Lines Police Station, and the motive behind the attack is yet to be confirmed.

Delhi BJP president Virendraa Sachdeva dismissed reports of a slap or stone-throwing. He said, “It seems the stories are fabricated. There was some jostling when a man pulled her hand, and maybe her head touched the edge of a table a little. Doctors have examined her, and she is stable.” He added that Rekha Gupta has assured that her programmes will not be cancelled.

A witness at the event, however, claimed that the man did slap the CM. “This is wrong. If an imposter can slap her, it’s a big deal. I was there when it happened,” said Anjali, who was present at the scene.

Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor confirmed that the attacker hurled abuses and allegedly tried to physically assault the CM. “It seems the person had criminal intent and political leanings. Police have detained him, and further inquiry is awaited,” he said.

The incident has drawn sharp reactions from across the political spectrum. Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav termed it “very unfortunate,” saying, “If the CM of Delhi is not safe, how can a common man or woman be safe? This incident also raises concerns about women’s security.”

Police investigations are underway, and more details about the attacker’s identity and motive are expected soon.
