Delhi Assembly Session Set to Begin: Arvinder Lovely Appointed Pro tem Speaker

The first session of the newly elected Delhi Legislative Assembly is set to begin on February 24, 2025, marking the start of a new political chapter in the capital. Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has appointed BJP leader Arvinder Singh Lovely as the Pro Tem Speaker to oversee the initial proceedings.

The session will kick off with an oath-taking ceremony for the newly elected MLAs at 11:00 AM, followed by the election of the Assembly Speaker at 2:00 PM. According to an official bulletin, LG Saxena will address the assembly on February 25 to outline the legislative agenda. After his address, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports will be presented, and the day will conclude with a motion of thanks regarding the LG’s address.

On February 26, discussions on the motion of thanks will continue at 11:00 AM, followed by the election of the Deputy Speaker. The assembly bulletin emphasized that the notice of motion for the election of the Speaker must be submitted by Saturday, February 22, before noon.

Meanwhile, Delhi’s newly sworn-in Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta, has promptly outlined her government’s priorities. In her first cabinet meeting, she announced two significant decisions: the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat scheme with a ₹5 lakh top-up and the tabling of 14 long-pending CAG reports during the first assembly sitting.

“This is just the beginning of our commitment to the people of Delhi. We promised better healthcare, transparency, and accountability — and we’re delivering,” said CM Rekha Gupta during a press conference.

The rollout of the Ayushman Bharat scheme addresses a key campaign promise of the BJP, which had criticized the previous government for not implementing the Centre’s flagship healthcare initiative. The Delhi government will cover the cost of the ₹5 lakh top-up and intends to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Centre soon.

With critical policy shifts, leadership transitions, and a packed legislative agenda, this assembly session stands to be pivotal for Delhi’s governance. The capital’s residents, eager for change and reform, will be closely watching as their elected representatives shape the city’s future.
