Stormy Skies Disrupt Delhi: Over 40 Flights Diverted, 100 Delayed Amid IMD Red Alert

New Delhi, May 2, 2025 — A powerful storm system swept across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) early Friday morning, bringing with it torrential rain, thunderstorms, gusty winds, and even hail. The sudden and intense weather event not only brought welcome relief from the oppressive heat but also led to massive disruptions in daily life, particularly in air travel.

According to reports, over 40 flights were diverted and nearly 100 were delayed at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi due to poor visibility and turbulent weather conditions. Passengers faced hours-long delays and widespread confusion, as airport authorities scrambled to manage the situation.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had already issued a red alert for Delhi, warning of severe thunderstorms and squally winds reaching speeds of 70 to 80 kmph. The warning, which remains in effect for several hours, urges residents to stay indoors and avoid non-essential travel.

The IMD stated that the intense weather results from western disturbances combined with high moisture levels in the atmosphere. The sudden burst of hail in parts of Gurugram, Noida, and South Delhi caught many residents off guard, with social media flooded with images of ice pellets and flooded streets.

While the showers provided a much-needed break from the scorching temperatures of the past few weeks, they also brought their own challenges. Commuters faced waterlogged roads, traffic jams, and disruptions in metro services in some areas. Several trees were reportedly uprooted due to the high winds.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation. Delhi Airport issued advisories requesting travelers to check flight statuses before leaving for the airport. Emergency response teams have been put on standby as further weather-related impacts are anticipated.

With the IMD maintaining its red alert, citizens are urged to stay updated through official channels and remain cautious until conditions stabilize.
