IOC Confirms Boxing in 2028 Los Angeles Olympics

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed boxing’s inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, following the provisional recognition of World Boxing as the sport’s new governing body. This decision officially sidelines the International Boxing Association (IBA) and marks a crucial shift in the administration of Olympic boxing.

Boxing was initially left out of the 2028 Olympics due to governance concerns surrounding the IBA. However, after withdrawing IBA’s recognition in June 2023, the IOC stated that a new governing body must meet its standards for transparency, integrity, and sports governance.

Following an extensive review process, the IOC granted provisional recognition to World Boxing on February 26, 2024. World Boxing, which now consists of 84 national federations across five continents, has been entrusted with overseeing the sport at the Olympic level.

Welcoming the decision, World Boxing President Boris van der Vorst called it a major step toward securing boxing’s future in the Olympics. He emphasized that this move restores the sport’s place on the global stage and ensures fairness in its governance.

With this decision, athletes worldwide can now look forward to competing in boxing at the 2028 Los Angeles Games under a newly structured and transparent system.
