Mithun Chakraborty to Receive Dadasaheb Phalke Lifetime Achievement Award for 2022

Mithun Chakraborty, one of the most iconic and beloved figures in Indian cinema, is set to be conferred with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Lifetime Achievement Award for the year 2022. The announcement was made by Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Railways, and Electronics & Information Technology, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, in recognition of Chakraborty’s monumental contributions to the film industry and his exemplary work in philanthropy and public service.

Mithun Chakraborty, affectionately known as Mithun Da, is renowned for his versatile performances, from action-packed roles to moving dramatic portrayals. The Minister expressed immense joy in celebrating the achievements of this film legend, noting that Chakraborty’s journey symbolizes hope, perseverance, and the pursuit of dreams—qualities that have made him a role model for aspiring artists across the country.

Born Gourang Chakraborty on June 16, 1950, in Kolkata, West Bengal, Mithun’s career in cinema began with a bang. He won the National Film Award for Best Actor for his debut performance in Mrigayaa (1976), directed by Mrinal Sen, where he portrayed a Santhal rebel. He is an alumnus of the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), and from there, he embarked on a remarkable cinematic journey.

Mithun Da’s breakout role came in Disco Dancer (1982), a film that propelled him to stardom and introduced the disco genre to Indian cinema. His electrifying dance moves and powerful screen presence captivated audiences in India and abroad. Over the years, Mithun became synonymous with versatility, excelling in various film genres—action, drama, and comedy. His critically acclaimed performances earned him three National Film Awards for his roles in Mrigayaa (1976), Tahader Katha (1992), and Swami Vivekananda (1998).

With a career spanning nearly five decades, Mithun has appeared in over 350 films across multiple languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Odia, Bhojpuri, and Telugu. He has left an indelible mark on Indian cinema with classics like Ghar Ek Mandir and Agneepath, the latter earning him the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1990. His contribution to the film industry is unparalleled, and he continues to inspire the next generation of actors and filmmakers.

The Dadasaheb Phalke Lifetime Achievement Award not only honors his cinematic legacy but also recognizes his social commitment. Mithun Da has been actively involved in numerous philanthropic initiatives, focusing on education, healthcare, and providing support to underprivileged communities. His dedication to public service is further demonstrated by his tenure as a Member of Parliament, reflecting his deep-rooted commitment to making a positive impact on society.

The award will be presented to him at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony, scheduled for Tuesday, October 8, 2024. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award Selection Committee, comprising esteemed personalities like Ms. Asha Parekh, Ms. Khushbu Sundar, and Mr. Vipul Amrutlal Shah, selected Mithun Chakraborty for this prestigious honor.
