SRH’s IPL 2024 Revamp: Cummins Leads, Vettori Coaches, and New Signings

Reported by Harsh Tripathi

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) has made some significant changes ahead of the IPL 2024 season, with Australian pace sensation Pat Cummins appointed as the new captain. Despite not having prior experience leading a side in top-flight T20 cricket, Cummins’ successful stint as captain of the Australian team, culminating in victories in the World Test Championship and the 2023 ODI World Cup, earned him the leadership role at SRH.

The leadership change opens up opportunities for SRH to explore different combinations, with new signings such as Australian batter Travis Head and Sri Lankan leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga adding depth to the squad. The presence of finisher Heinrich Klaasen provides further options, while Cummins himself will bolster the team as the overseas fast bowler. SRH’s overseas contingent also includes Afghanistan’s Fazalhaq Farooqi, South Africa’s Marco Jansen, and New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips.

In addition to Cummins’ appointment, SRH has brought in former New Zealand spinner and captain Daniel Vettori as the head coach, replacing Brian Lara. The team also made a change in the bowling department, with former New Zealand all-rounder James Franklin taking over from Dale Steyn as the bowling coach.

SRH’s IPL 2024 campaign kicks off with a match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on March 23, followed by a home game against Mumbai Indians on March 27.

Cummins’ return to the IPL comes after he withdrew from the 2023 season to focus on international cricket. His record-breaking bid of INR 20.50 crore at the auction underscores his value in the league, making him the highest-paid player in IPL history at the time. Cummins’ stint with SRH marks a new chapter for the franchise, which has seen a revolving door of captains in recent seasons.

From Kane Williamson to Aiden Markram, SRH is banking on Cummins’ leadership to steer them to success in IPL 2024.Despite the challenges of adapting to a new captain and coaching staff, SRH remains optimistic about their prospects for the upcoming season. With a blend of experience and fresh talent, the team aims to make a mark in the tournament and vie for the coveted IPL trophy.
