Supreme Court of India announces new working schedule

In a significant administrative move, the Supreme Court of India will reinstate the second and fourth Saturdays as working days, effective July 14, 2025. This change is part of the Supreme Court (Amendment) Rules, 2025, officially notified by the Ministry of Law and Justice and published in the Gazette of India.

 

Under the amended rules outlined in Order II, Rules 1 to 3, the Supreme Court offices will operate from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on all working days, excluding designated holidays and partial working days. On weekdays, urgent filings will be accepted only until 4:30 PM.

A notable change is the addition of the second and fourth Saturdays, which were previously considered holidays, to the list of working days. On all Saturdays, including these, the working hours will be from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and urgent matters must be submitted by noon.

 

For special holidays like Christmas and New Year’s Day, the Chief Justice of India will determine and announce working hours on a case-by-case basis. The full text of the amended rules will be available on the official websites of the Supreme Court of India and the Ministry of Law and Justice.

 

In related news, Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai was sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI) on May 14, 2025. He is known for his role in landmark judgments, including the one upholding the abrogation of Article 370. Justice Gavai was elevated to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019. At 64 years old, he is set to serve as CJI until November 23, 2025. The oath was administered by President Droupadi Murmu at a formal ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
