Heavy Rains Lash States as IMD Issues Orange Alerts

Several parts of India experienced intense rainfall after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued orange alerts across multiple states on July 8. States like Maharashtra, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, and Telangana recorded heavy downpours, triggering both relief from heat and concern over damage and disruptions.

Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district witnessed significant destruction after a bridge at Ojri on the national highway leading to Yamunotri was washed away. This incident has disrupted road connectivity to the holy shrine and impacted local transportation.

In Delhi, the IMD had issued a yellow alert, predicting light to moderate showers. While rains brought relief from soaring temperatures, they also led to waterlogging in parts of the capital, including the Mehrauli-Badarpur Road. The good news for Delhiites, however, came from the Central Pollution Control Board, which reported that the city recorded its longest streak of satisfactory air quality this year — 12 consecutive days with AQI below 100.

The IMD has also warned of “very heavy rainfall” in parts of Madhya Pradesh until July 10, in Odisha and Chhattisgarh on July 8, and in Vidarbha on July 8 and 9. East Rajasthan and Uttarakhand are also expected to receive continued rainfall through July 10, while Marathwada and Telangana remain under watch until July 9.

Meanwhile, hot and humid conditions continue to prevail in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. Fishermen have been warned to avoid the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal due to rough sea conditions. States like Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Goa, Karnataka, and West Bengal are under advisories regarding the suspension of fishing activities.

The weather system is expected to remain active in these regions for the next few days, with more updates to follow based on satellite monitoring and localized weather developments.
